"The Future of 5th Avenue"

Collaborative project of Alice Adams and Ken Smith, Landscape Architect, for this invitational exhibition. They wrote “New York’s Fifth Avenue has always been a symbol of elegance, fashion, display and parade. We see this tradition continued and dramatized in a series of design improvements inspired by the physical and cultural context of the Avenue as it changes from one end to the other. Our coordinated episodic structure of the street would render it as elegant and hospitable in Harlem as in Washington Square. Tempering Fifth Avenue’s monumentality and grandeur with wit and whimsey is our way of forging a design strategy in response to the history of the place.
